Demonstration - Juno First for the IBM PC
Juno First is a space shooter developed by Konami for the arcades that is something of a cross between Galaga and Defender. Datasoft acquired the rights to port it to home computer platforms and released ports for the Atari 8-bit home computers and the Commodore 64, but an IBM PC port was discovered last year. I am running it on my IBM PC/XT.
This port clearly requires composite color CGA graphics, like other Datasoft PC ports like Bruce Lee and Lost Tomb. I have used the colors produced by an older IBM CGA card. The game does support the IBM PCjr. but that support consists only of a speed-adjustment for the slower PCjr. Composite color from the PCjr. would look...interesting. I have applied a 4.8K lowpass filter to the PC speaker to remove some of the aliasing.
The game requires a joystick and uses button 1 to fire and button 2 to warp. When the background turns green, you will see a white human-like figure. If you touch the figure, then the background color will go gray and you will earn extra points for shooting down enemies. When the background begins to flash gray and magenta, that is a warning that the bonus points mode is about to end.
It is unfortunate that this port languished in obscurity for so long, because it is a better port than C64, Atari or MSX versions from this era. While at a disadvantage graphically and aurally, the controls are very responsive, the gameplay is fast-paced without being ridiculous and the action is fluid.
