In the second part of my Famicom AV modding series, I replaced the Famicom's original RF/Power Board with a BackOffice Power VAMP v3 board which provides composite video and audio. While that mod improved the Famicom's video and audio quality significantly overall, it made the jailbars inherent in the Famicom's noisy video more prominent.

I decided to try the NESDev "Ideal AV Circuit" Mod. The Power VAMP v3 board remains in the Famicom, but I bypassed its video circuit and used a board from CatHouse Games which replicates the NESDev circuit. http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/PPU_pin_out_and_signal_description#Composite_Video_Output The Power VAMP v3 still is used for providing power and audio output and its TRS AV jack is very convenient to use to connect to the video generated by the CatHouse Games board.

This time there is proper mono audio (SMB is slightly out of sync for some reason) throughout the video and I reduced the lag on my capturing setup, so I do not have to fight against as much lag.

The CatHouse games board is more of an involved installation than just the Power VAMP v3, and if you do not use the Power VAMP v3, you will need to find another way to connect AV cables if you do not use the Power VAMP and want the NESDev Ideal AV Circuit.

So, was all that effort worth it?
