Design Your own War Mech with Millions of Combinations in 6v6 Combat | War Robots: Frontiers Preview
Hey guys, we were invited by UberStrategist PR and MY.GAMES yesterday in a media-exclusive preview event gearing up for the FREE-TO-PLAY release of their game War Robots: Frontiers. Thanks to UberStrategist and MY.GAMES for the key and the invite. Here are my thoughts:
War Robots lets you take on the role of a Mech Commando and you are deployed to fight battles in Wild Ten, the game's extraterrestrial setting. Take up to six highly-customizable mechs from your hangar to the battlefield and fight in intense 6v6 battles in different game modes. I got to try playing against the other media invitees and content creators during the preview and it was loads of fun.
So here goes: the Mechs themselves are a bit unwieldy to control at the start - but once you get the hang of it the combat really shines. Each part of your robot has its own health bar, and your mech gets destroyed once one of the body parts gets destroyed. Thankfully, your mech has a shield barrier that blocks damage and regenerates when you're not being shot at. Combat in this game is mostly about shield management, focus firing single opponents' body parts, tactical maneuvers by your team and strategic takeover of the map. There's also another catch - in most game modes, you only bring a specific number of mechs to battle, and once they get destroyed, they remain destroyed for the rest of the match, so you have to manage your mechs as well. Run out of mechs and your team will find themselves outnumbered and overrun.
The game was really fun and I was impressed by the game's physics engine, which governs the mechs' maneuverability and its interaction with the terrain and the environment. The game is also very polished and in spite of playing from the the Philippines (the servers were located in the EU) I didn't experience any lag, latency or even frame drops. It's a really well-made and well-polished game.
Now, the game is F2P, so there's a lot of concerns with the game's microtransactions. I must admit that I haven't explored much of this aspect of the game. It appears to have a Battle Pass, and there is an in-game currency that you can buy with real money. The devs explained that everything you can buy with money can be earned through grinding and that mthe ajority of what you can buy are cosmetics. There's a currency used for modifying your mechs, and you can purchase that with the premium currency, so that's one angle I could see how money could at the very least accelerate progression. But by far, I haven't seen anything outright predatory. Of course, this could change once the game comes out to F2P, so keep your eyes peeled.
War Robots: Frontiers is a revamped version of the same devs' mobile-first game War Robots. Unlike the first game, Frontiers is not available on mobile devices, so the devs were able to stretch the game's features and mechanics. If you love mech games, enjoyed Armored Core and MechWarrior, then give this game a try.
War Robots: Frontiers will launches on March 4 for Windows PC via Steam and the official website, and on PlayStation 4|5, and Xbox One and Series X|S. Check it out on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1491000/War_Robots_Frontiers/
Devs have confirmed that there will be cross-play, but cross-progression is not yet implemented in the game.
