DFFOO JP - How does Freya fare in Shinryu Difficulty? (Freya/Snow/Kain VS Act 3, Ch.8, Pt.1 Lv. 300)
The new weapon tier is finally here, and with it a new difficulty. Much like when Freya got her EX+ originally only for Lufenia to come in soon after (starting off a certain saga...), Freya has only had her LD for a little over a month and already there is a new weapon tier and difficulty to contend with!
The Orb is gone, but instead there is the enemy's Force Gauge to contend with. I haven't looked up any information on this fight and did it blind, but from what I can gather, the enemies gain an escalating BRV Damage Resist, BRV Gain Reduction to the party, and HP Damage Resist depending on how many segments of their Force Gauge is filled. They then will activate their Force Time when their Force Gauge is full, which can have a variety of effects unique to each boss. I'm not 100% sure on what this boss will do but I know that they can paralyse you and guaranteed KO you (which ignores things like Last Stand as it just sets HP to 0 rather than doing HP damage, like a Lufenia Orb). I think the guaranteed KO is also influenced by a character being below a certain amount of HP for too long.
I was able to MLB Kain's new Force Weapon and max out his Force Enhancement points for this. Kain's LD gave him Freya's Trance Jump from FFIX before she even got it for herself, but it's now been updated to have two HP dumps for him. I think that's reasonable given that he doesn't provide a lot support wise to the party. He has his BT to provide some auras (though I haven't pulled it yet, that's why I brought a friend Kain with BT), and he can enable Force Time with his Force Weapon, but IMO I don't think either of these two are really replacements for the other despite the similar mechanic, and in fact I was surprised how well it works out to bring the two of them. This is because in order to raise the HP Damage Bonus for Kain's Force Time, you need to do ranged damage and launches. However, it will count ranged damage on a "per ability" basis, which will include individual follow-ups. So by having Freya and Kain both be in the sky during Kain's Force Time, you can build up the HP Damage Bonus REALLY fast, even on enemy turns. Of course Freya provides offensive auras, healing, battery, and Last Stand as well. I used Snow as my third character because he's perfectly safe for the most part as a tank to take all of the hits while the other two are in the air, and he has nice auras and his awesome BT effect as well.
In terms of strategy these enemies are pretty simplistic, and don't really have a lot in terms of their normal attacks. They can paralyse you but since Snow has a Lock debuff, Freya and Kain don't have to worry about getting paralysed and Snow only got paralysed once or twice anyway IIRC. The main hurdle to get over in this fight is how tanky these guys are in combination with the 55 turn count. These guys have about as much HP as the Transcendence 9 Reckoning bosses, but you have about half the turns to finish in compared to that fight. Finding a way around the harsh reduction auras that escalate as the bosses build up their Force Gauge is the key to victory.
My strategy was to take it slow at first until the enemies filled up their Force Gauge, though I used Irvine's LDCA to lower the enemy's SPD and for it's 20% HP Damage Taken Up debuff, allowing me to reasonably do damage and space out the turns so I could get that damage in, in spite of the escalating reduction auras. Then after the enemy finishes their Force Time and my Force Gauge is charged, I call in the Kain friend, use his BT, use Snow's BT finisher, and then summon on Freya's turn. Freya and Kain then get to keep Ifrit's Hellfire buff in the air to help them do even more damage, and Kain activates Force Time before he jumps off-screen. Then I transition into the usual Cid Raines LDCA powered Burst phase with Snow after the summon. Force Time ends partway through the Burst phase, but this is OK - the main purpose behind me blowing all of these things in succession is that I am keeping the enemy Force Gauge paused, which IMO is more important than trying to abuse my own in Burst for bigger numbers. This will result in me having a bit of a head start in charging a second Force Gauge for right after the enemy's second Force Time, which will be what I use to finish them off by exploiting Freya and Kain being able to attack on enemy turns.
Overall the Force mechanic is pretty interesting to play around with but I can also see how it could get tedious if they make Force Time super long for some fights in the future. Another benefit to Freya and Kain jumping off-screen is that they can make the enemies get more turns in Force Time which gets rid of it faster and saves on the turn count and their skill uses while still getting damage in, so maybe I will keep abusing that if I can.
