Namor the Sub-Mariner is actually one of Marvel’s very first superheroes. Namor premiered alongside the Angel and original Human Torch back in 1939. He first appeared in the unpublished Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly number 1 in April 1939, but his official debut came in Marvel Comics #1 in October 1939. They actually had to change the name of his kingdom for the film, because Namor is actually the ruler of the underwater realm of Atlantis in the comics. Naturally, the filmmakers wanted to make sure there was no confusion with Aquaman and DC’s Atlantis, so they named the realm Talokan after the Aztec underwater realm Tlalocan.
