246During the scene where the monkeys steal the police car, the stunt woman, Betty Thomas Quee, lost control of the car and ran into a tree going sixty miles per hour. Luckily, she was unharmed, and the director, Joe Johnston, had to plead with the paparazzi who got pictures of the incident to not release them. Also, for the scene where the stampede rams into the library, they actually had to use a steel rhino attached to a hydraulic ram. After slamming the rhino through the wall, the editors replaced it with a full stampede in post production. Robin Williams mentioned that acting with CGI creatures was like acting while on LSD since he had to hallucinate all of the things he had to interact with.
