The wormhole was placed near Saturn as a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Originally, Stanley Kubrick had wanted part of the film to take place near Saturn, but at the time, they couldn’t computer generate the rings of Saturn properly. So, he changed that part to a Jupiter landmark. Also, Christopher Nolan took an interesting, personal approach to get Jessica Chastain to be part of the movie. He actually had a specific script watermarked with her last name on it, and he had his assistant take it to Ireland where Jessica was filming Miss Julie. After she read the script, she wasn’t allowed to keep it.
