There are multiple homages to Stephen King novels. The actual premise of a house coming to life and eating people is based off of Stephen King’s third installment of the Dark Tower series. Also, while they’re in the basement, Chowder shines his light on a mechanical monkey which is similar to the one written in “The Monkey” from the collection of short stories called “The Skeleton Crew”. Originally, DJ and Chowder were going to be bullied by two kids named Ryan and Cameron, and DJ was going to lure them to the house to get eaten on purpose. The bullies were removed because the studio thought that this storyline was too dark.
