Fowler’s military service isn’t just a joke made up for the movie, and he really was involved in the war. In 1944, there was an actual recording made during the invasion of the Marshall Islands. Fred Welker reported a sudden appearance of a chicken amidst the gunfire, and he broke the tension between both sides. Then, Welker states that there are multiple chickens appearing, and he assumed that the U.S.O. sent them. Also, Ginger and Rocky were named after two real chickens. They belonged to the co-writer and co-director, Nick Park, and they were his childhood pet chickens.
