The screenwriter, John August, had never actually seen the original Gene Wilder film when Tim Burton came to him to write the script, and when he was done writing it, he finally took the time to watch the original. After watching it, he was surprised by how dark the old family classic actually was. Gene Wilder mentioned that he didn’t like the fact that they were remaking his film for the sake of making money, but Johnny Depp actually defended the film by mentioning that this wasn’t a remake of the film but actually a new adaptation of the book. Also, there is a scene where Willy’s father tells him that he’s allergic to chocolate so that he doesn’t eat any, but in real life, Johnny was actually allergic to chocolate as a child.
