0During the scene where Leslie tells Jess about Janice’s home life, they walk to a swing by a tree house. While walking, you can notice Jess has a slight limp. This is actually because Josh Hutcherson developed stress fractures in his back from him playing too many sports and being too overactive during filming. Also, shooting was done in sequence, so for Josh Hutcherson to understand just how magical things his character was looking at, they created a scale from 1 to 10. They rated Jess’ view from the treetops at a level 10. On top of that, the five stages of grief are a key factor throughout the film, and they used that to help Josh focus his performance during later parts.
