The legs for the faun were actually not computer-generated at all. Guillermo ended up creating an entire special system that the actor’s legs would control like the faun’s fake ones. The actor's legs had to be digitally removed later in post-production. The faun in the film were actually inspired by lucid dreams Guillermo would have over and over while he was a child. At midnight, he would wake up to find a faun gradually stepping out from behind his grandfather clock. In fact, he started writing ideas for the film back in 1993.
