Originally, the creature’s suit was going to be cast in silicone, but they ended up going with a mostly foam rubber while having elements of silicone added for translucency. This is no surprise to people in the movie industry since Guillermo is known to prefer the foam rubber on his creatures. Plus, the lighter foam obviously made life a lot easier for Doug Jones who had to wear the costume everyday. In fact, the creature resembled Abe Sapien from the Hellboy movies that Guillermo Del Toro also created. Doug Jones also played Abe Sapien on top of the creature in this film.
