Love-stories & the arc of “prince charming” are staple to any fairytale movies, animated or live-action productions, be it Disney or other studios. But this Pixar movie in 2012 was the first film & its protagonist “Merida” was the first Disney princess to not have a love-interest in the entirety of the film. This was an intentional decision on the directors Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman’s part. The pair explained how young girls have been conditioned to thinking that “A prince-charming” has to come & rescue the “damsel in distress”. Brave’s Merida proves that the damsel can save herself from distress, & a prince’s gallantry is not always necessary.
