I recently unboxed the NextEngine 3D Scanner HD I received and was very excited to put it to work. This video covers the entire process from end-to-end on how to user this NextEngine 3D Scanner HD to generate accurate textured 3D models from objects in real life. This system works by guiding lasers of a fixed object while recording the deformations in the laser line. It then has a motorized platform that rotates the item you are scanning so that it can get multiple scans and compile them together into a single mesh. This method has also been used in the home brew community for some time (look up David Scanner).

There is not a lot of information on this scanner online and that is why I felt compelled to make a detailed video on using it. The truth is I like the scanner but to be honest it's much harder to use then I found it should be based on internet videos I have seen and the instructions are pretty good but not perfect. I find that it takes a lot of time and effort to build decent models with the scanner and it's not an idiot proof turn key solution like NextEngine would have you believe.

I hope this video helps you make informed decisions and if you find that I'm doing something wrong in the video people tell me in the comments. I am going to continue to test on this unit for a week or so and if I can get all the kinks worked out I plan to keep it otherwise I am going to return it and search for alternate ways to make 3D models that are more accurate and usable without so much effort.

In this video I scan the following from start to finish:
1) Sanyo Air-Conditioner Remote Control
2) McDonalds Chicken McNugget
3) XBOX 360 Controller
4) My face

The NextEngine 3D Scanner captures objects in full color with multi-laser precision. Breakthrough technology has made it the World's most popular 3D Scanner, with thousands of users in over 80 countries.

In one box is everything you need to digitize 3D models, including ScanStudio HD software. Exports to STL, OBJ, VRML, XYZ and other formats.

Output 3D scan models to popular design software like SolidWorks, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Rhino, Mathematica and more. Use with ScanStudio CAD Tools to quickly make surface files or RapidWorks to build solid files. Print models on Dimension, 3D Systems, zCorp, Objet, and other 3D printers.

Design
The NextEngine 3D Scanner is accelerating product design at many leading companies. They're capturing complex and organic shapes, and designing new products, packaging, and physically compatible parts.
Manufacturing
Many manufacturing cycles begin with a physical sample. Our customers are using scans to create new molds, castings, & fixtures. They're machining copies of old parts and creating rapid prototypes with CNC routers, mills, & 3D printers.
CGI
When it comes to modeling organic shapes, what could be better than nature itself? With the NextEngine Scanner, CG Artists are creating models directly from scan data, or using scans as references to create Sub-D models.
Art & Architecture
Leading artists and architects are taking shapes from the physical world and incorporating them in their designs. From giant art installations to furniture scrollwork & fine jewelry design, they're doing amazing stuff.
Medical
Practitioners in dental, prosthetics, orthopedics, and auditory labs are using the scanner to improve turn-around times and patient outcomes. It's also helping medical and safety equipment makers create products that save and improve lives. This show is an independent production of Jerry Berg (aka Barnacules).
