Dino Crisis Game Sample 1/2 - Dreamcast
Dino Crisis can basically be seen as "Resident Evil with Dinosaurs" as many people put it, and it looks and plays mostly like a RE title. It was originally released in 1999 for Sony Playstation and was later ported to Windows and Dreamcast in 2000. It was produced and directed by Resident Evil mastermind, Shinji Mikami, who was involved with the creation of almost every RE game currently available. It does have a few problems, but it is generally a good game, though a bit awkward in pacing. The game has several unlockables akin to those from RE titles: Extra costumes, Weapon/Ammo Upgrades, and an unlockable mode known as "Operation: Wipeout". The game was met with mostly positive reviews.
The year is 2009 and your mission sounds simple enough on pen & paper; find and apprehend Doctor Edward Kirk, a world-reknowned egocentric scientist obsessed with energy R&D who reportedly died three years prior in a lab explosion. A member of the Secret Operation Raid Team (S.O.R.T.), Tom, discovered that he is actually alive and hiding at a research facility in a (fictional) place known as Ibis Island and is leading a secret weapons project. S.O.R.T. sends four more skilled agents (Regina, Gail, Rick, and Cooper) to go to Ibis and take Dr. Kirk into custody. This would be a simple task if the island wasn't overrun with DINOSAURS! Deal with them long enough to survive and learn about Dr. Kirk, and you'll win the game
While the game has your staple weapons, you're going to have to come to terms with the fact that this game is just a wee bit different from RE. For starters, the folks who developed this deemed dinosaurs as significantly harder to kill than zombies, and part of your task simply comes from AVOIDING enemies and not simply killing them all; they take quite a lot of ammunition to kill in the early portions of the game and tranquilizers were made for this purpose. By mixing various items together (some with surprisingly unrealistic outcomes), you can alter the potency of healing items or weapons. For example, you can make some really strong darts that leave dinsoaurs sleeping until you attack them and wake them up. Another difference is that you'll sometimes leave blood trails and grow weaker, but this also alerts some enemies to your presence. Be warned-- some enemies can open doors, so never assume that you're completely safe.
The game never really seemed as scary or clever as the first few RE titles to me, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It would be followed by a few sequels and a spin-off (which later titles in the series began to help forge its own identity). This is a series of videos that covers roughly the first 30 minutes of the Dreamcast version (let's call it the "Shiny" version) of Dino Crisis. Enjoy.
