One of the most essential components of the Portal series' plot is that you're essentially alone, accompanied only by some batshit insane artificial intelligence. But before your player character Chell, there was Doug Rattman, whose torment by GLaDOS has driven him to insanity. You never see him and you don't even know if he's alive or not, but his presence is always felt; this is most notable in his frantic wall scribblings that include that unfunny catchphrase everyone knows... and this theme.

In Portal 2, in one of his "dens" of food stocks and scrawlings where he hid from GLaDOS, this... song... can be heard. While the eerie choir and backing are unsettling on their own (evoking the sense of a ghost, as in the title), what put this theme straight into this series was that... rambling in the background. Though to an extent it sounds like a guy beatboxing, if you listen closer it sounds like the speaker's voice is cracking and stuttering like a man experiencing a mental breakdown. And given where it plays and the song's title, it's unsettling to think that these are the actual ramblings of Doug Rattman, like he still haunts the Enrichment Center, alive or dead.
