Here’s a RPG title for the SNES that comes completely out of left field and manages to not only turn the genre on its head. Earthbound from developers APE and Hal Labs takes everything you now and love about RPG’S and turns it completely on its head and introduces more of a light hearted humorous style but, also is a lot more involving then many others I have played and perhaps may well be one of the most original and unusual games ever to come out for the SNES. Whilst the core elements require that you do all the usual things in a game of this genre. Such as, levelling up, earn money, buy weapons and visit towns and talk to NPC’S. Its the last element that is fundamental to progressing in this game. As certain important puzzles, or storylines wont resolve or progress unless you talk to absolutely everyone in an area and more often then not you will have to speak to certain characters multiple times. The thing is though every single person you speak to will say something that you wouldn’t expect. Many break the fourth wall, say some random funny comments and by working in this manner the game cleverly hooks you in making the world of Earthbound and its inhabitants seem more real then most RPGS.

You start the game and play as young boy who learns that a meteorite has crashed in the hills near his home and upon investigating it leads him on a quest to become essentially the chosen one who must eventually team up with 3 other people who are all destined to stop an evil nightmarish Alien creature called Giygas. So you’ll be roaming round at first pretty weak and vulnerable to attack. But as you engage in random battles you become a lot stronger and tactile earning not only more hit points but also magical attacks which unlock and become stronger and much more ferocious the more you fight. Every hero in an RPG seems to have a sword right its kind of like what you do. Well, in Earthbound the main hero and his party can carry baseball bats, sling shots, frying pans and toy guns etc. The mere fact that the devs decided to change the formula makes the game feel a lot fresher for me. Plus the grinding is much more rewarding here meaning that you wont be working yourself to death for hours trying to earn enough money to gain the next important weapon, armour piece or item. The game is extremely generous when you win a fight giving you far more experience points and cash then you would normally get ina traditional RPG and this also means that you can level up and make swifter progress at the same time. Whilst this is a good thing there are occasions when the random battle do become a little annoying because in this game when you go into most towns you do need to spend a lot of time again making sure you are speaking to everyone, visiting shops and solving puzzles. So you’ll be spending a lot of time in one area and monsters can even attack you in towns which is a pain because the story and tasks are really incredible and being interrupted when you know what you have to do and are about to do it can really disrupt the game.
