I recently reviewed Kirby’s adventure on the Nintendo Entertainment System and in that video, I briefly mentioned that it was the second game in the series and that the first game was released a year earlier. 1992 was the year of Kirby’s debut on the Nintendo Gameboy and judging by how each game released thereafter have managed to surpass its predecessors with new twists and but also staying true to the basic formula, Its interesting to see where it all began for the pint sized pink blob. The evil penguin king Dedede has stolen all the food in dreamland and taken it to his castle in MT Dedede. With the inhabitants starving and with no ability yet to shop online at Asda, a little blob called Kirby declares that he will save his home world and bring all the food back. So, a very simple premise for a very simple game. Yet, Kirby has some of the most unusual abilities ever seen in a platformer. This guy is like a mini vacuum cleaner in that he can inhale his enemies and use them as projectiles to knock down other baddies, he can also fly and dance when the occasion calls for it. Unlike later games in the series Kirby can’t steal any enemies powers but there are power ups littered around each level that he can take advantage off. Also there are a number of goodies to be found some hidden and some in plain sight. Such as 1Ups and Health pickups. Kirby’s can only take 6 hits before losing a life and so must tread carefully. However there are a number of additional temporary power ups he can he gets mitts on. Find a Mike and this guy screeches, or eat a curry and he blasts fire, or how about the invincibility lolly which allows Kirby to go through his enemies John Matrix style
All the in game sprites and graphics are massive, cutesy imaginative and fun as the upbeat welcoming music invites you into a brief glimpse into Kirby’s world. I say brief because this is not a long game and it can be finished in about 25 minutes. There are only 5 levels and while some may feel a little annoyed at this, I really don’t mind. To me it is a case of less is more. Kirby never outstays his welcome and because of this the game always feels fresh fun and like others in the series is incredibly rewarding. I just love how Hal Labs have been so creative with some of the enemy types that you encounter. The waddle dee’s and waddle doos’ are my favourites and poppy bros Jr. You will find that there is a nice mix of different baddies to fight across each stage. As I mentiond there are only 5 and the last one essentially is a boss rush but whats so cool is that no two levels look or play the same. You start off in Green Greens where everything is bright chirpy and fun, storm a labyrinthian castle filled with ghosts and witches, fly across gorgeous islands, up into the clouds and then its onto Mt Dedede for a showdown with the Penguin King! The games controls are easy to use with A acting as the jump button and B to inhale and spit out enemies or projectiles whilst Pressing up allows Kirby to fly.
