Kirby’s Dream Land 2 is perhaps one of the most imaginatively awesome games ever released for the Nintendo Gameboy. Developed once again by Hal Laboratory and released to critical acclaim in 1995. This second foray into Dreamland see’s Kirby out to retrieve the stolen rainbow drops which connect all of the Islands in his world. They are now in the possession of new evil entity called Dark Matter who used his dark magic on fellow antagonist King Dedede to take them. Once again our cute little pink blob immediately springs into action and sets off across 7 new areas to retrieve them and forever vanquish Dark Matter and his black magic from Dreamland forever.

A lot has changed since the first Gameboy outing and fans of the series will be pleased to know that this time Kirby’s Dreamland 2 implements the copy ability which was used so prominently in Kirby’s Adventure on the NES;. This means that now Kirby will be able to inhale certain enemies and take their abilities to not only use them back against them. B some can also be used on a plethora of bosses and are actually required to help nab the rainbow drops which are trapped behind barriers which require a bit of head and in some cases perfect timing and precision to get. Kirby controls exactly as he did before and can jump, inhale and fly and once again it is the kind of game that anyone can just pick up and play instantly.

Hal Labs have also tweaked the level structure with each area Kirby visits containing numbered doors behind each lies a different level some of which contain mini bosses to fight. Each door must be completed in order to unlock the next one and this continues until Kirby unlocks the Main boss door where he must battle some new and familiar foes. These new levels are not just linear affairs as in the first game. Some have multiple routes, hidden doors, much more dangerous stage hazards. Once again everything is very consistent with every Kirby game and it’s a testament to the developers who have outdone themselves once again making everything so familiar with the same enemies and layout but mixes it up adding in carefully layering new challenges which never feel out of place or unduly unwelcome. For one thing Kirby can now pick up little stars in addition to 1ups dotted around every stage. Collecting 7 of these grants Kirby an extra life. Even the way Kirby finishes a level is now exactly the same as in Kirby’s Adventure on the NES. Players must now push the A button down at the right time to allow the little guy to propel himself up a number of clouds. The higher he can get the better the rewards. These range from Sauce to replenish 2 bars, Tomatoes which completely fill health bar and at the very top is a 1up which adds an extra life to his total.
Perhaps one of the biggest changes and new additions to Kirby’s Dreamland 2 is the inclusion of animal buddies. That’s right you heard me correctly animal buddies! There are 3 in total to find and each one seriously overpowers Kirby turning into him into a force to be reckoned with. There’s Rick the hamster, Kine the Fish and Coo the Owl and can be found on many of the levels containing a mini boss that must beaten to get one. Their abilities need to ne used to the maximum if you again want to find all of the rainbow drops. Also, if Kirby currently has an ability when using them they will use the same ability he has but in a much more unique and concentrated way allowing Kirby to tip the scales in his balance.
