Now that’s what I call a title screen. Its big Bold in your face and has one of the best 8 bit compositions I have ever heard. It’s IronSword Wizards and Warriors 2 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed by Rareware and released in 1989 for North America and 1991 in Europe, Wizards and Warriors 2 once again puts you in the shoes or this case the boots of Kuros who has learnt that the evil wizard Malkil has risen from his grave and has used his power to turn himself into the 4 elements of earth wind fire and water. Kuros must quest across various locations based upon said elements in the land of Sindarin and acquire the necessary spells and weapons to defeat him. In order to do this the knight must also appease certain animals by finding key items which when found will allow him to get further through the game. The game is a platform/puzzle game which does have some RPG element. Kuros typically must work his waythrough an area by defeating respawning enemies, collecting keys to open chests which hopefully contain new weapons or spells, visit shops to buy items and try and figure out just what to do. Thankfully all of the areas are relatively small and self contained and once you work out the lay of the land most of the time it’s all pretty self-explanatory.
Controlling Kuros is kind of a mixed bag. I mean he moves pretty spritely going left to right and you kind of need to hold down A to get him to jump a little higher and then move in that direction. It takes a little while to get used too especially if you are expecting him to be able to move like Mario. If Kuros hits a slope on then he goes sliding all the way to the ground and once he is in this animation you can’t control him. So as you climb upwards you learn what you can walk on and where you jump. Rare for some reason seemed to have done away with combat. Push B and Kuros does not swing his sword or whack enemies. Instead he kind of lunges forward and misses what he is trying to hit. At times it does not seem like he hits anything at all and even with the mightiest weapon he just wont use it. This becomes a real problem because what really spoils the game is the respawning enemies and you would think that putting in a decent attack would have made sense. The only feasible way to take out enemies is to jump into them or letting them fly onto the tip of your sword in the hopes you can get some health or magic. So it’s a double edged sword on one hand the enemies contantly attacking you is annoying but you need them to try and fill your meter if your on a boss. Speaking of bosses you can’t even use your weapons on them which I find very puzzling. Why give Kuros weapons if you can’t feasibly use them. In fact for all the bosses you need to find certain spells and use them against each one.
