First you draw a circle. Then you dot the eyes. Add a great big smile and hey presto its Kirbys adventure for the Nintendo Entertainment system. Released in 1993 and developed by Hal Laboratory Kirby’s adventure is another late release for the aging 8 bit system and is the second game in the Kirby series and at the time served as a kind of a sequel to Kirby’s Dreamland which was released only a year earlier on the Nintendo Gameboy. Quite a lot has changed in dreamland since the tiny little hero defeated King Dedede and bought peace back to his world. The star rod which controls not only the actions of the people of dreamland but also the ability to dream has been stolen unsettling the once delicate balance and sending Kirbys home into dark chaos. With events now taking a turn for the worse Kirby once again decides to try and save dreamland and retrieve the rod which has been split up and divided into 7 vibrant worlds. It would appear that the pink blob may have his work cut out for him as this game is a lot bigger then the last one. It features many of the same enemies and bosses before but also some enemies encountered actually have powers such as fire or ice, hammer, laser and even sparks to name a few. Luckily Hal Labs implemented what would become a staple of the series in that as well as just suck and inhale enemies, Kirby can now take their powers and use them against themselves. This is an absolute godsend and gives the player free reign to decide which power would better suit them in a certain situation. There are however a few occasions where you need a certain power to unlock a secret, to be far more effective in a boss fight or to just finish a level.
What’s so cool about Kirby’s adventure is that is not at all cryptic and is just a fun game with the same upbeat jolly ambience that Kirby’s Dreamland had. Its got such a lot of charm and I like how consistent the developers were in not changing the enemies too much making everything feel familiar bt at the same time expanding Dreamland which is a lot bigger this time around. And and the further Kirby gets through the game, the more rewards he is given. Often these come in the form of bonus games or hidden surprises in some of the levels that eagle eyed players will be able to spot. It just blows my mind every time I see the graphics that this game has. The visuals are so colourful and bright and I had no idea that the 8 bit NES could be made to produce these rich colours and effects that are in the game.
