Kickmaster. The name sounds like some kind of futuristic football game. What it is however is a 2D action side scrolling platform game fused with some RPG levelling up elements. Developed By Taito and released on the NES in 1991. Kickmasters plot involves an evil wizard called Belzed who has gathered his army of monsters to storm Lowrel castle and kill the king and queen and their knights. Not content with this he has also taken Princess Silphee back to his tower. Only two knights managed to survive the evil sorcerers attack Macren and his brother Thonolan. Whilst starting the journey to Belzed’s evil tower the siblings are attacked by some demonic skeletons and despite their best efforts Macren dies. Before he does though he begs Thonolan to go on without him and fight this dark army with his incredible fighting skills. Most notably his legs which thanks to heavy training in martial arts allows him to emit powerful kick attacks to destroy his enemies. The first words out of my mouth when I started up the game were. “This is freakin awesome”. Given that the story is very much rooted in swords and sorcery I was expecting the gameplay to reflect that. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily Thonolan controlled. He can do a variety of different kick manoeuvres from straight kicks, flying kicks, slide kicks and as enemies are defeated he can collect the booty that they leave behind which power up the martial arts master. This is where the Levelling up takes place as these power ups are essential to improving Thonolan’s, experience and Magic. The more experience gained means a higher energy bar with increased and stronger more effective attacks which means enemies and bosses will go down quicker. Also, the further you get the more magic spells you find, and these range from round projectiles, an intense lighting shower, wings which enable him to fly and even the ability to heal himself. Of course its imperative that you collect as many magic points as possible and you don’t waste all your magic too soon as this will lower the chances of success.
Its clear that Taito took a lot of influences from many different games. It’s the little things like when Thonolan finds an item he heroically raises it up in the air like Link does in The Legend of Zelda and the way story unfolds with some animated cutscenes that look like they belong in Ninja Gaiden. The levels themselves particularly some of the dungeons wouldn’t look out of place in a Castlevania game. The whole game looks extremely sharp with a lot of for the time advanced graphical power which was yet another example of developers pushing the NES to produce some good looking visuals. The game has 8 exciting action packed levels to battle through and the game even has a handy dandy password system so yu can carry on where you left off with your current stats intact.
