Does Your Computer Have Bad Memory? How To Find Out.
Random Access Memory (RAM) wears out over time. If your PC frequently freezes, reboots, or brings up a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death), bad RAM just might be the problem. Corrupt files can be another sign of bad RAM, especially when the corruption is found in files that you’ve used recently. Another possible symptom: The PC slows down considerably as you use it, but seems re-energized after a boot.
What is RAM and What Does it Do?
RAM is short for Random Access Memory. RAM is volatile, meaning that when the power goes off, everything stored in RAM disappears. RAM is extremely fast; a typical stick of DDR4 RAM used in a modern PC can perform around 2,400,000,000 transfers each second, moving 64 bits of memory in each transfer.
RAM is the highest-speed storage your computer uses. By comparison, a solid-state drive (a hard drive using a much-less-volatile form of memory called flash memory) is one or two orders of magnitude slower, while conventional hard drives (which store data on a physical disk and are relatively permanent) are another two orders of magnitude slower. Speaking very generally, the RAM in your computer is somewhere between 1000 and 10,000 times faster at moving data around than a hard drive.
The more RAM you have, the more you can do at once. If you don’t have enough RAM for your open applications, your system will slow down as Windows (or another operating system) has to move data in and out of the page file on your system drive. You might even see a low memory error if there’s not enough RAM.
How much RAM you need depends on what you do. You’ll need more RAM for playing the latest PC games, running virtual machines, and editing 4K videos.n’t try to replace individual chips on the stick.
