For those who don't know, Nintendo released an updated version of the NES Donkey Kong. It was originally released in Europe as a celebration of the 25th anniversary for the Mario series. It was included in a Wii bundle. It was later made available in both Europe and the United States through a promotion on the 3DS.

I actually think this version is worse than the original release because it includes the 50m stage, also known as the Cement Factory. It may sound better at first because this level was originally cut, but the way they implemented it on the NES is terrible. In the original arcade version, Donkey Kong was supposed to be moved by the conveyer belts on the top of the screen. This was supposed to let the player know when the conveyer belts would change direction. However, now Donkey Kong remains stationary in the top left corner of the screen. This means the player won't know when the changes happen. The hitboxes around the pans of cement are also lousy. You can't be anywhere near them or else it will count as a hit.

I'm starting to think the original Donkey Kong isn't that great after all. More and more what I thought was my skill seems to just have been luck. I thought this game would have the courtesy to make sure you weren't put in unwinnable situations. I thought it would try to leave an opening for you to get through and you lose if you don't figure it out fast enough. Now I think it truly is random, and so the game is ultimately unfair, because it can send barrels or cement pans after you that are impossible to avoid. I was only able to survive to the beginning of Loop 6 on this version, and the 50m stage stealing my lives away didn't help. This game is probably one of few that I would recommend finding some kind of reproduction cartridge of to play. As far as I know it's no longer available officially from Nintendo. If you didn't get it through the promotion, it's one of your only options.
