In this video I'm sending a crystal clear message, don't buy the Atomos Ninja V for recording HDR gameplay from the Xbox Series X and Sony PS5 gaming consoles.

00:00 Intro & explanation
01:06 Xbox Series X problem
02:11 PS5 Problem
04:54 More info
07:17 End summary

The Atomos website clearly says that the Ninja V can record HDR gameplay and is showing the Xbox Serie X and Sony PlayStation 5 along with that statement. Yet Atomos support told me in an email that Atomos have not tested the PS5 for HDR with the Ninja 5.

My video shows the issues clearly. The Ninja V was on the latest firmware and my HDMI cables were all capable of supporting 4K 60FPS HDR. In fact, you can clearly see the HDR signalling when the PS5 is connected and the exact same HDMI cables were used on the Xbox Series X. Furthermore, these HDMI cables are rated for high speed and 8K, plus, I also used the Microsoft supplied HDMI cable for the Xbox Series X and that did not work.

The results are these. The Atomos Ninja V is incompatible with the Xbox Series X for recording HDR and the Ninja V is so problematic with the PS5 so as to be effectively useless for recording HDR from the PS5.

As mentioned in the video as far as I'm concerned I received terrible customer support from Atomos. Their support didn't seem to understand my very clear questions and they totally contradicted what Atomos said on their website. Also. As you will see in the email conversation my last request was for clarification on what info was correct, the Atomos website or the customer support info. Atomos support never replied.

Hi.

I've just bought a Ninja V specifically for Xbox Series X and PS5 game capture and am having issues recording HDR. I've checked the Atomos FAQ but can't find any further information.

When connecting the Xbox Series X it does not recognise the Ninja as a HDR compliant device. This is the same whether I'm using the Ninja on its own or passing the signal through to a HDR monitor.

I'm on the latest firmware for the Ninja and I've also used a number of compatible HDMI cables including the one that came with the Xbox.

I'm assuming that I may not have certain settings set correctly on the Ninja. Are their specific settings on the Ninja that I need set in order for the Xbox to recognise it as a HDR compliant device? Or should this be automatic?

Can you also confirm the settings that the Ninja should be set to for recording HDR from the PS5 and is the Ninja supposed to set itself automatically for HDR from the PS5.

I have no problems recording both the PS5 and Xbox when using standard rec.709 up to UHD/59.94.

Cheers
Dave

Hey David,

thanks for asking.

Have you enabled "HDMI HDR Auto" in the Ninja V's input menu? This sets an HDR flag which is required in order for an XBOX or PS to output HDR into the Ninja V.

We only suggest turning HDMI HDR Auto to ON, when you're connecting the Ninja V to a Playstation or XBOX gaming console, because they require this setting to output HDR over HDMI

Best regards
Atomos Support Team

Hi

Yes I have tried with the setting on auto and the Xbox Series X does not recognise the Ninja V as a HDR destination.

When going to the calibration screen on the Xbox it won't go into calibration as it does not recognise the Ninja as HDR. Also, the information page on the Xbox for 4K TV Details. Clearly says "your TV setup does not support HDR10". Obviously in this instance, TV is the Ninja.

The Ninja input settings do not change from 709 when in auto, no matter what I do with the Xbox. I don't have any issues with the Xbox switching to HDR when connected direct to a HDR display.

What are the colour space and gamma (gamma/gamut) supposed to indicate for Xbox Series X and PS5?

As I've bought this Ninja specifically for game capture, I take it I won't have any issues getting a refund if I have to send the Ninja back to the re-seller. I bought it from RCB Logic but it was shipped direct from Holdan.

Cheers
Dave

Hello David,

Thank you for clarifying.
Unfortunately, Atomos has not tested the Ninja V with the new PS5 and cannot confirm the HDR setup will work.We are hoping to have this tested soon but do not have an ETA.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

ATOMOS Support Center

Hi

When you say "Atomos has not tested the Ninja V with the new PS5 and cannot confirm the HDR setup will work". Atomos clearly say on their website and on the Ninja V product page that it is HDR compatible for game capture "Record 4K HDR Gaming" with both the PS5 and Xbox Series X shown.

Here's the product page https://www.atomos.com/products/ninja-v

Also. You mention the PS5 but I was specifically asking about the Xbox Series X and the PS5 does indeed work with the Ninja V for recording HDR.

Is this a known issue with the Xbox Series X and the Ninja V not being able to record HDR from it?

I'm just seeking clarification because what you've said is at odds with the Atomos website information.

Cheers
Dave
