[Doom 2] Jenesis Map 17: Deadline (UV-Max 7:28)
Pretty cool map, featuring an underground techbase with a railway traversing some tunnels. An interesting touch is that the railway does damage, giving the impression that it's electrified. And I could swear that I also saw some zombies drop dead on the railway but I guess it's up to you to make up your mind.
The player has some choice in deciding where to go first although you still need to find keys for general progress. This means that I had to spend some time to find an optimal route. At first, I took the route in the demo, going left at the beginning and opening the door to reveal the revenant and the dark cave-like room. Then I would immediately turn back and run to the other side to grab the other super shotgun. This would aggro a lot of enemies in a short space of time and has worked generally well. It's also a safer way to play, and has led to my first exit of 8:11 after only 8 deaths, which was surprisingly hard to beat for me (I got three other slower exits after that). However, eventually I tried to do it the hard way, by simply running into the cave room and grabbing the super shotgun at the back. It's a little tricky, as well as the next bit where you enter the base. However, after grabbing the rocket launcher (which I didn't seem to be able to do for a few seconds :P), things generally get easier. The end is a blast, with plenty of rocket launcher and plasma gun fun. However, there seems to be water next to that final stretch of railway, meaning that you receive continuous electrical damage until you reach higher ground - making things a little tricky again.
Ammo was never a problem. I especially liked the fact that there were plenty of rockets around to get your business done. I could also afford to skip some stashes lying around with enough to spare towards the end. The map itself is also not too hard but enough of a challenge.
I'm quite happy with the 7:28. For me, it's a good time, despite the odd fumble here and there. I'm quite sure that below 7:00 is possible though.
This demo was recorded using the PrBoom Plus port (v. 2.5.1.2), captured on video using Screenflick v. 2.2.21 and edited using iMovie '11 v. 9.0.4.
