In today's video “DOOM 2016 vs DOOM Eternal” instead of trying to determine which of the two is better, I want to highlight the differences of the two games to try and give a spotlight at the reasons why some people may prefer one over the other.

The tone and themes of DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal are quite different, if in DOOM 2016 the atmosphere is very grim, dark and unsettling, in DOOM Eternal it is bold, in your face and very straightforward. This is something that you can notice right away from the coloring of the environment, the UI, the font of the texts and the artistic direction of the games.
The story of the two games has many underlying similarities, the Slayer needs to eradicate a demon invasion in both games to save Earth. The differences are set by the villains: Olivia was corrupted by promises of power given to her by the demons, which led her to open a gateway to Hell on Mars, two places that the Slayer visits alternatively in that game. The Kahn Mykr instead, is the leader of an alien (?) society who, to survive needs argent energy, created by consuming entire planets and literal civilizations. I personally have a strong tendency to think very hard about games stories, and DOOM Eternal kinda confused me a lot about the past of the DOOM Slayer, so I try to not think too much about the story when playing DOOM Eternal.

The two games are both amazing to play, and there isn't almost anything quite like them that came out in recent years. In both games the Slayer integrates his arsenal and upgrades his suit through the course of the story. If in DOOM 2016 the various weapons do fit certain roles to take down certain enemies, DOOM Eternal doubles on this concept by introducing multiple specific uses of the same weapon, or weapon attachment, against a limited set of enemies. This encourages the player to change weapons more often, which makes the game arguably more challenging than its predecessor. This sort of improvement was possible thanks to demons now going into actual pieces when shot at, because it's not just an indication of how much damage you did to a demon, you can actually destroy their weapons and attachments! Another point in favor of the increased weapon specificity of DOOM Eternal is the alterations ID Software made to the Chainsaw. While in DOOM 2016 it already provided the player with an ammo recharge every time he took down a demon with it, there was a lot of ammo placed around the levels, and the Chainsaw was mostly used as a last resort to kill specific powerful demons, and this means it was rarely used because of the fuel required to take down those demons. In DOOM Eternal instead, the Chainsaw automatically recharges its fuel to allow the player to get more ammo, and this is absolutely for the better because there isn't almost any ammo placed in in DOOM Eternal's levels. DOOM Eternal also saw the introduction of many new demons, and each one of them has its own quirks that really make the player think about prioritizing targets, of course this was also true in 2016, although not as much. I also would have liked if DOOM Eternal had toggleable reverse Glory Kills instead of removing them.

Another great thematic component of the games is their music, in DOOM 2016 we've heard for the first time this new take on DOOM's music that I've seen some people around call “Argent Metal” for it's peculiar execution as a reference to the Argent Energy of DOOM 2016. The soundtrack made it's composer, Mick Gordon, a living legend among gamers just over the night of the game's release. It is powerful, dark, empowering, and agonizingly amazing. My favorite part of it was hands down the little theme that you get for completing each level. In this regard DOOM Eternal has a few differences, while some tracks like “The Only Thing They Fear Is You” or “Gladiator” do have the same impact of DOOM 2016, they slightly tone down the dark aspect of 2016 to double on the empowering side of things. Other tracks such as “Arrival at Phobos” offer instead a new cool take to ease you into the game with catchy variations of the usual themes, that feel overall a little less impactful in my opinion, but make for a nice change of pace. Unfortunately for me this last type of music replaced the level completion theme that I really loved from DOOM 2016.
I think DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal are both great games, but after analyzing the two games I think I would suggest them both to two different types of people: 2016 to players who like more cinematic approaches, and DOOM Eternal to power gamers who really prioritize gameplay over everything else.
