The first video on this channel (unlisted) is actually me beating the icon of sin like 6 years ago in like 1:30, which is a perfectly average time for a casual player. Still embarrassing to re-watch now. I've been wondering how this fight can be made faster, so i checked the world record attempt and saw that neat tick of jumping to the platform immediately as it starts to raise. I thought "wow cool, that shouldn't be too hard". I was wrong, that jump is very hard, at least for me it was. To land that jump you have to turn to exactly 45 degrees and begin to SR40 in the same frame as flipping the switch, and it has to be a perfectly straight shot once you start moving. Then you have to also not overshoot the platform, not get knocked off by stupid arachnotrons or archviles if you're unlucky enough for them to spawn, and then practice the hell out of the rocket timing to know when to start firing and when to run off the edge. For a Doom God I'm sure that's nothing, but for me I am very satisfied with 4 seconds shy of the current WR.
This is classically a bad map, but it does hold a special place for me anyways, and also has one of the best, most broodingly evil soundtracks to come from Doom or any game for that matter. I wish it took longer to beat so more of it could play.
