26My first chiptune with sample-based percussion!
DoTheSame is a fun puzzle game that was recently received a homebrew port to the Sega Master System by French programmer Eric M. (AKA Ricco59) For this new port, he contacted my friend Bryan Ness (AKA Tobikomi) to provide the music. Bryan is an excellent chiptuner and composer, and he did a wonderful job with the OST. Hearing some of the music for myself about a week or two ago, it got stuck in my head, and I fell in love with it instantaneously. I loved the music so much that I was inspired to do something I haven't done until now: a cover of a song made by a friend. Not only that, but it made me finally decide to try my hand at using DPCM percussion samples after neglecting the idea for over a year (in this instance, I used samples from Gimmick! and Mad City). I am absolutely joyful with how this cover turned out, and not just because of the successful implementation of the DPCM percussion or the seamless transition of the song from the SN76489's PSG to Nintendo's combined force of the 2A03's PSG and the 2C33's wavetable synthesis. I also managed to properly create an echo effect after studying Yuzo Koshiro's examples in Dragon Slayer 4/Legacy of the Wizard and Sonic the Hedgehog (the Master System version), and it does great wonders in this song. So, here's to you, Eric and Bryan! And, here's to you, my dear listeners! ;D
