I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game reviews are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. Let's try out those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

Jay's Thoughts
When a gang of thugs punches your girlfriend in the stomach and then abducts her into the night, you better hope your name is either Bimmy or Jimmy Lee. Er... Billy Lee. Sorry, old habit from my NES days.
Double Dragon is a class side-scrolling beat 'em up, which basically means you're going to be doing a lot of walking and a lot of punching. The world of Double Dragon is inhabited by countless random thugs, luckily they're mostly pretty easy to take down. Though, I did play the arcade version of Double Dragon and that means the game is a little more unforgiving than other incarnations because they wanted you to pony up a healthy supply of quarters if you wanted to beat the game.
Overall combat is pretty simple yet satisfying. Some bad guys are tougher than others, and you will likely have to resort to some cheap drop kicking tactics at points to avoid being brutalized by enemies that won't let you get close enough to land a normal punch or kick. But overall it's still a fun game. I like that you can pick up random weapons and even steal weapons from fallen enemies. The levels are varied and interesting, and include physical obstacles as well as an endless stream of thugs.
Double Dragon is one of those classic fighting games that everyone should play at some point. Most versions allow for 2-player co-op play so be sure to try that out if you have a friend. Either way, a good game that's deserves a try.
➙ Must You Play It?
Double Dragon is an iconic classic beat 'em up game with simple controls and gameplay that holds up even today. It may be a short game by today's standards or perhaps a little simple, but it's definitely still a fun game to try.
