Jay's Thoughts
Intelligent Qube (or Kurushi Final in Japan) is one of the most unique games I remember from the PSX-era. It's basically a puzzle game where you need to eliminate certain blocks from a moving pattern. The trick is you have to place detonation tiles several "turns" in advance and wait for the pattern to move forward onto your detonation tiles. If you mess up you end up losing part of the field you're playing on, giving you less space to setup future detonation tiles... confused yet? Yeah, it's probably easier if you just watch the gameplay video.
Though the concept is hard to explain, actually playing the game is pretty simple. The puzzle mechanic is unique and interesting, and that game also has this weirdly epic feel to it (especially the soundtrack). To this day I have no idea why they called this game IQ. I can only assume the Kurushi Final is some kind of similar reference to a test or assessment in Japan. Either way, the odd title only serves to make this game further stand out as unique.
So should you play this game? Maybe. I believe that people who enjoy puzzles or strategy games could enjoy it. It's not as engrossing as I remember it was when I was a kid, but it's still an interesting game. Definitely one that stands out from the first Playstation's game library.
➙ Must You Play It?
A unique and interesting puzzle game where each mistake you make can make the subsequent puzzles harder. It's a good game though it isn't for everyone.
