Down the World - Part 4/6 - SFC (SNES) - ダウン・ザ・ワールド ~ A Hidden Throne
Down the World: Mervil's Ambition is a Super Famicom (Super Nintendo) JRPG published by ASCII in 1994 that, you guessed it, never left Japan. Susumu Matsushita is once again involved with the game's artwork, as the cover art clearly shows. What's particular about this game is that you can almost have it play itself out. The battles are semi-automatic, where your characters will just move, attack, and heal without any input on your part, but you can try to control movement with different formations (aim for the boss only, stand still, etc.) and you can always cast spells as you wish. Battles will always include a 'boss', and usually a bunch of other enemies, too. If you kill the boss, you'll win the battle even if other enemies are still present. You can also have your characters move through dungeons with a command called "go along the walls", and they'll go about until they find their way out. Same thing on the world map; choose a location and they'll head in that direction. I did not make use of these because I wanted to control my characters, but I wish I could have controlled battles a little more. There are a lot of random encounters. And some dungeons (such as the tower with invisible holes in the floors) can be quite difficult and long to beat as a result. The story is nice. You, the player, are some kind of invisible hero/god that will guide your main characters to princess Sara's location in order to prevent her from dying. Some of the tunes are nice, but the battle music you'll hear throughout most of the game becomes repetitive, fast, since you'll hear it so much. Overall, I thought the game was both fun and frustrating, and it's definitely not for everybody.
