Dragon Age: Origins Plot Analysis: Part 14
After solving the elven alienage problem of plagues and abductions, we finally attend the landsmeet. Where all your hard work and allegiances with Ferelden's nobles pay off! Or do they?
Frankly it felt rushed. This was less a trial of showcasing evidence, and reckoning brought to a villain, and more a conversation where we were being talked to.
There's also the basic idea of why in fact, Grey Wardens are best suited to fight the darkspawn and the archdemon. Surely we have the detection ability, but an army of trained soldiers would be more effective. Loghain's reasoning in seeing the darkspawn as just another invader makes sense, and since dragon's aren't completely scarce, it comes to reason the kingdom may have ways of stopping one. The problem is how he went about it; going along with Tim's ideas, not communicating this well to the Queen and the nobles, and wanting to kill off the Ferelden Wardens.
Loghain is certainly this game's Saren, and a more robust character in being our nemesis. His actions, and his opinions on saving Ferelden seem in conflict; his Orlesian bias is surely his greatest flaw. He's sold Ferelden citizens to slavery to fund a war, gave the keys to the city to a powerhungry sadist, poisoned a noble with a bloodmage, and hunted us down -- another Ferelden noble -- who just wanted the same thing as he does, to stop the Blight. This is what makes Loghain a great villain; his actions seem confusing and evil to us, though to him are perfectly reasonable.
It is unfortunate the politicking and coercion we went through didn't properly showcase our choices, actions, and his reasoning as well as it could have.
