The Dragon Ball series, one of the biggest and most successful franchises ever, includes a plethora of movies, TV series, and games. However, when it comes to the movies, fans often wonder, "Which Dragon Ball movies are actually canon?" This confusion arises mainly because many of these movies contradict the main plot of the anime and manga.

For fans who want to know which Dragon Ball movies are canon, it's important to understand that many older films are more like “what if” scenarios rather than direct continuations of the story.

For example, movies like Dragon Ball Curse of the Blood Rubies, released in 1986, and Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle, from 1987, retell or alter events from the anime and manga, making them incompatible with the main storyline.

With Dragon Ball Z, the series gained even more popularity, leading to numerous movies that are mostly not considered canon. However, there are some exceptions, like DBZ Dead Zone, released in 1989, which is generally seen as part of the anime canon because its villain, Garlic Jr, appears in a filler arc in the TV series.

Dragon Ball GT is even trickier. Launched in 1996, it's not based on Akira Toriyama's manga and is considered non-canon. Its only movie, Dragon Ball GT A Hero's Legacy, is regarded as a TV special and wasn’t released in theaters. Even though this movie is canon within GT, the series itself is now considered unofficial.

Since 2008, Toei Animation has produced only canon movies. Dragon Ball Son Goku and His Friends Return!! introduced Tarble, Vegeta's brother, who appears in Dragon Ball Super, keeping the story continuous. Movies like Battle of Gods, from 2013, and Resurrection 'F', released in 2015, were included as the first arcs of Dragon Ball Super.

This trend continued with Dragon Ball Super: Broly, written by Akira Toriyama, which fits directly into the Super anime. This film, along with Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, stays firmly within the official storyline.

With Dragon Ball Daima coming out in 2024, fans are more excited than ever. Both old and new fans continue to debate and explore which Dragon Ball movies are actually canon, eagerly awaiting Goku and his friends' next adventures.
