This is video #001 in my Dragon Quest X gameplay series! This video does not contain commentary. To view the commentary version, click here: https://youtu.be/hf43n--3ERA

Dragon Quest X is the first MMORPG in the Dragon Quest series. Sadly, Square Enix has not seen fit to localize it for their English-speaking customers, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to show it off. I'm playing the Nintendo Wii edition. For this edition, you need either a Japanese Wii or a Wii modded to be Japanese. I got an inexpensive Japanese Wii from eBay. This was before the PC version was released, or else I would be playing the PC version. The Wii needs the Japanese Wii shop installed, as well. Fortunately, you don't need to be a Japanese expert to enjoy the gameplay. You also need a VPN connection to get through Squeenix's firewall. I use VPNGate, which is free. There is an excellent setup topic on the Dragon's Den's forum.

I removed the opening cinematic from this video for copyright reasons. After loading the game, I create new characters in offline mode (time 0:55). You first make the character that will become your primary online character. Then you make a sibling, which will become the player character in the extended offline campaign. My primary will be a younger boy named Davilas, like my Dragon Quest VIII playthrough character. The sibling will be a teenage boy named Talint, after one of the possible names of the Prince of Cannock in Dragon Warrior II.

After character creation, we can choose whether to skip the primary character's tutorial quest if we have already completed it for another character (time 7:53). I will not skip it.

After some initial scenes, we gain control of our main character, Davilas, at home in Eteene village (time 10:53). Sounds like our sibling, Talint, has been up to some mischief.

Outside, it may help to talk to Tarara (time 13:14). Pots, barrels, and wardrobes have random items.

The smithy is on the eastern side of town. In the back room, we can pick up an Yggdrasil Leaf from a chest (time 18:44).

Outside, on the southeast bank behind the waterwheel house, a treasure chest contains 52 gold (time 21:34).

In the church, we have to talk to a young man named Shini (time 28:45). We have to say Yes ("Hai") twice, and then we will have to pick up a couple of things for him.

Inaku on the bridge will have some information about using the map to find NPCs (time 30:08).

For the first item Shini needs, we talk to Nei in the waterwheel house (time 31:49).

For the other item, we talk to Nora in the house across the way from the waterwheel house (time 32:38).

At the church, we take the items to Shini (time 34:17).

We can now get into Aba-sama's room for an amusing scene (time 35:26). She asks about our sibling.

Afterwards, we can open a chest in Aba's room to get a set of Stardust Earrings (time 37:28). They increase some stat, but I don't think it's defense. I'm thinking either agility or evasion.

At the shop, we pick up a copper sword and a leather shield (time 39:34).

Then, we head out into the field north of town (time 41:25). There are easy enemies like Slimes and Teeny Sanguinis in the southern part of the field. Battles are no longer strictly turn-based. They seem to have taken on the ATB aspects of Final Fantasy games.

It doesn't take long for Davilas to reach Level 2 (time 43:47). He learns Hoimi, or Heal.

In the eastern cul-de-sac, we can find Golden Tanglewebs, which can be sold (time 46:34). There are also interesting stones.

If we have helped Shini and Aba earlier, we will find our sibling here (time 47:04). The sibling is dabbling in alchemy. I guess that explains the explosion earlier. After giving the primary sibling a silly hat, he will join the party.

The nearby stones discuss the five races we'll be able to choose from after a while.

On the way back to town, Davilas reaches Level 3 (time 52:14).

Next, Davilas and Talint will report in to Aba-sama at church.

Thanks for watching!

This video is part of my Dragon Quest X playlist. I am playing the Nintendo Wii version of the game on a Japanese Wii. All characters, story, music, artwork, and other components of this game are the property of their respective owners.

Played on the Nintendo Wii. Recorded with the Elgato Game Capture HD device and software. Produced with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.
