Metroid II: Return of Samus [GB] Commentary #05, Areas 6 & 7: Metroids 12-05
This is video #05 in my playthrough of Metroid II: Return of Samus. This video contains commentary. To view the non-commentary version, click here: https://youtu.be/EASJVchL8rA
Samus has reached the save station in Area 6 of SR388. This is the last major ruins area of the game, and seven dangerous Metroids lurk here. Samus has already defeated Metroid 13, a Gamma Metroid.
The exterior of Area 6 is a large open space, and the Space Jump is the quickest way to get around.
In the lower left of Area 6, she will come across Metroid 12, Zeta Metroid #1 (time 0:18). This creature mutates from Gamma to Zeta before Samus's eyes. These guys are tricky; they float in midair and can only be damaged from the front or back. They take 20 missiles to defeat.
Along the left-hand side of the ruins, Samus can access rooms with the Ice Beam, Wave Beam, Spazer, and Plasma Beam. I'm keeping the Spazer, though.
Farther up the shaft, when she finds a Metroid shell, she can turn left to find her next victim (time 1:10). She soon finds Metroid 11, Gamma Metroid #14 (time 1:31). Kind of a relief after that Zeta.
Atop the Area 6 ruins, Samus drops down inside (time 2:40). The interior is pitch-black. She can lay a breadcrumb trail of bombs to make sure she's moving. Within, Samus can find Missile Expansion 20. Up and to the right, she can jump up to get Energy Tank 5.
Outside, Samus Space-Jumps up to the right to get to the next Metroid. Soon, she reaches Metroid 10, Gamma Metroid #15 (time 3:50). This son of a gun is hidden inside sand.
Back outside, Samus uses the Spider Ball to crawl up and bombs through the upper-right corner of the ceiling (time 4:31). Up there, she finds Energy Tank 6 and Missile Expansion 21. The Energy Tank is her last. Too bad she can only keep five Energy Tanks.
A short way down the right-hand side of the ruins, Samus blasts through a bombable rock to gain entrance (time 5:25). Just after entering, she finds Metroid 09, Zeta Metroid #2 (time 5:33).
Twenty missiles later, she climbs up and finds the useful Screw Attack (time 6:20). Samus will damage the enemies she touches while spin-jumping, and more importantly, she will be immune to much enemy damage.
Outside and below, she will find a missile refill in the wall near a Metroid shell (time 6:57). Then, down and to the right, she can bomb down through a corner to find Missile Expansion 22 (time 7:18). This is her last!
Then, Space-Jumping up, she will come across Metroid 08, Gamma Metroid #16 (time 7:27).
After dropping down a little bit, she will find a doorway to the right (time 8:02). Beyond, she will find Metroid 07, Zeta Metroid #3 (time 8:22). This fight is tricky since this Zeta hides in the sand.
This takes care of all the area's Metroids. And thankfully, it takes care of the last Gamma Metroids and all the Zeta Metroids in the game.
Samus drops out of Area 6 and returns to the main shaft next (time 9:54). Proceeding along the main shaft, she eventually climbs up into Area 7 (time 10:56). Area 7 is very small with only two Metroids ... don't let the 1 on the pause screen fool you.
In the top chamber of Area 7, she finds a Metroid shell and Metroid 06, Alpha Metroid #15 (time 11:35). This is the game's last Alpha. But it emerges straight from its shell, so where is the owner of that other shell?
The ground quakes after the Alpha's demise, but this time acid rises to block Samus's exit from Area 7. What is up with that?
When she returns to the place where she fought the previous Metroid, she will see why (time 12:51). Metroid 05, Omega Metroid #1, has appeared! These advanced Metroids are upgrades to Zeta Metroids, but fortunately, they are not quite as fast. Forty missiles to the front are required to defeat them, but missiles to the back will deal double damage. The Space Jump and Screw Attack will help Samus avoid damage when the Omega swoops around. The Screw Attack will also nullify the damage from its fireball/acid. Upon its defeat, the ground will shake again.
Back in the main shaft, Samus will find that the acid that had risen before has now drained away (time 14:13). This allows her to move forward to the depths of SR388.
At the end of the main shaft, Samus will emerge in Area 8 (time 15:37). A save station can be found here. Next, she will face the Gamma Metroids of Area 8.
Thanks for watching!
