REVIEW:
----------------------------------------------------------

Another day, another retro-inspired FPS where you shoot the living hell out of everything. And boy, does David Szymanski's Dusk deliver. Religious zealots, ruthless soldiers and demonic creatures may run amok in a variety of locations but fortunately you have an appropriate arsenal to respond with. Cue fast paced design, adrenaline inducing music and a lot of targets and you'll have your money's worth guaranteed.

Gameplay in these types of games are always the cream of the crop. Progress through each level wrecking enemies, find weapons, key items and spicy secrets galore and try not to die doing so. Movement is fluid and fast paced, you rarely feel weighed down. All this stems from simplistic design but works very well as the game does not put on airs or complicate matters; you are given tools and the freedom to make your way through each level how you see fit.

The aesthetic of this game is very appealing to immerse yourself in. Each level's theme makes it quite clear the type of environment you're dealing with and the appropriate ambience to boot. It mimicking 90's shooters as well is definitely a selling point as it takes advantage of nostalgia quite well. It wasn't shown in the video but the game is very lenient with the visuals/audios to customize in the settings as well for your preferred experience. I very much appreciate a game giving these options to players.

I imagine the story can be pieced together with the ominous dialogue of the mysterious voice and environmental clues but personally, it was quite vague. You're immediately thrown into things with no handouts and must make do with what you can, in both gameplay and plot. The ending seems to take inspiration from Half-Life's cliffhanger as the protagonist seems to be trapped in a state of stasis until needed otherwise, potentially setting up a sequel. These types of endings seem a bit cheesy to me and are a basic way to set up further story-writing but since this game is more gameplay focused than story-wise, I won't critique it too harshly. Ultimately, I think a lot of people might have to go to this game's Wikipedia page to get a full account of what exactly is the plot.

I do like when games like this take inspiration from many different works. I said this game emulates a lot from Doom and Quake but other games like Half-Life and Blood certainly have their influence set in as well. Seeing what else inspired Mr. Szymanski from Wikipedia such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Texas Chainsaw Massacre and even Redneck Rampage, I can certainly see the connection with these sources, encouraging even more creativity. Taking what worked best in the past and fleshing it out into something unique is a style I can get behind without a doubt.

I normally don't critique the level design in these types of games as they usually give you a lot of breathing room and make it apparent where to go but there's always the chance of confusion when required to backtrack or a new area opens. There were a few times I was disoriented and stuck wondering where to go because I forgot an area that was locked or blocked becomes available and I have to search every area again until it appears and it'll jog my memory reminding me of it. I'll argue it's more the fault of my memory more than design but the way these levels can be, I fear it's always an element that'll annoy people eventually, minute as it may be. Food for thought.

Finishing this review up, I really can't find much fault with Dusk as it's just a fun game, plain and simple. You get exactly what you paid for tenfold and the fun aspect rarely falls flat (assuming you enjoy this type of game/genre). Hell, I'd argue this game would be the perfect starting point for people new to FPS as well, everything can be catered to your liking and challenge. I definitely recommend Dusk to anyone no matter what type of gamer they are.
