What's most surprising about Dying Light's excellent expansion The Following is just how thoughtfully and seamlessly the vehicle traversal has been woven into the blood-soaked fabric of the core gameplay formula established in the original release of Techland's survival horror/open world adventure. Driving a nitro-powered, flamethrower-augmented automobile through huge environments far from the tight urban confines of Harran could easily have been a real game-breaker, but the palpable sense of tension which makes Dying Light stand out among open world games is retained despite this radical new transportation option. Every little stop along the way - and such detours are necessary since you need to grab crafting materials and stock up on fuel - feels suitably dangerous, as there's always a risk of being suddenly overrun by zombies even in the most deceptively serene of The Following's rural locations. Driving clumsily into a tree or backing into a corner while hearing the demented screams of the undead drawing closer leaves the player on edge every bit as much as being chased over the rooftops in Harran did. Dying Light's fundamental appeal and distinctiveness have thankfully not been diluted or replaced with some game-breaking power fantasy despite the expansion's unexpected innovations.
