Since recording this video I've completed the five remaining story chapters in ACU. Finally getting back to the game to finish it felt rather satisfying, primarily because its digital version of Paris remains such an astounding virtual creation. Storywise, Arno and Elise might seem boring compared to the lively Jacob and Evie in the more recent AC game Syndicate, but at least there's less of a cartoonish quality to the Revolution era duo and their differences in terms of belief systems and personal priorities are more interesting than those of the squabbling London siblings.

As always with Assassin's Creed games, however, the main missions started to became tedious and frustrating halfway through. Apart from story-related Templar/Assassin fatigue, the primary problem is the confusing stealth gameplay which never quite "clicks" for me. The sluggish nature of the controls combined with the lack of situational awareness (due to inadequate feedback about enemy vision cones etc.) means that AC always lacked the slick precision and clockwork pacing of dedicated stealth games like Hitman: Absolution or even Ubisoft's own Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Rushing impatiently and sloppily through the last few assassinations and other assignments is not a particularly impressive strategy, but Assassin's Creed has never convinced me that it's worth making more than the minimum effort required to get to the next cutscene.
