Fans of director Edgar Wright were understandably upset when he exited Marvel’s long in development Ant-Man movie earlier this year, but it turns out it may have been the best decision for Marvel’s ever-expanding Cinematic Universe. In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Ant-Man star Evangeline Lilly explained how she was initially upset when Wright and Marvel parted ways, saying that she almost exited the project having not officially signed on to play Hank Pym’s daughter “Hope Van Dyne” in the film. She explained that if it was a case of Marvel being bullies and just looking for someone to be their puppet and not have their own vision, she wasn’t interested in being in the film. She decided to hold off on signing her contract until she had a chance to read the new script, which she learned was the reason for Wright exiting the film in the first place. When she got her hands on the script, that was rewritten by Ant-Man himself, Paul Rudd and his Anchorman writer/director Adam McKay, Lilly realized that Wright’s version of the story didn’t fit in the world that Marvel has created saying quote, “..What Edgar was creating was much more in the Edgar Wright camp of films. They were very different and I feel like, if [Marvel] had created Edgar’s incredible vision — which would have been, like, classic comic book — it would have been such a riot to film [and] it would have been so much fun to watch, [but] it wouldn’t have fit in the Marvel Universe. It would have stuck out like a sore thumb, no matter how good it was. It just would have taken you away from this cohesive universe they’re trying to create. And therefore it ruins the suspended disbelief that they’ve built.” With her worries about Marvel’s intentions alleviated and a successful meeting with new director Peyton Reed, Lilly says she decided to officially sign on and never looked back. As for fan concerns that the film will focus on Scott Lang’s “Ant-Man” rather than original hero Hank Pym, she thinks fans of both will be ultimately be pleased with what they’ve done and as for her character, having been the product of two superheroes – Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, aka Wasp – Hope will be a smart, competent, capable and kick-ass female. We’ll have to wait until July 17th to find out for ourselves how it all comes together when Ant-Man lands in theaters, but you can find out which 7 comic book movies were tops on our list this year by clicking here. But first, does it sound like Edgar Wright exiting Ant-Man was the best thing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe or would you have rather seen his version of the film regardless of how it fit with the other movies?
