This is it, my precious’, the final installment in The Hobbit trilogy! The Battle of the Five Armies is set to arrive in theaters soon and it will be your last chance to catch a newly told Middle Earth adaption from Peter Jackson on the big screen, though it may not be for reasons you’d entirely expect. The Battle of Five Armies had its world premiere on Monday in London and with it came speculation as to whether or not this would be the end of Peter Jackson’s tenure with Middle Earth. Speculation is warranted as the director’s name has become synonymous with JRR Tolkien’s works with Jackson revolutionizing the way we look at fantasy film, beginning in 2001 when he released The Fellowship of the Ring, the first installment in his Lord of the Rings trilogy. The films did extremely well garnering a stack of Academy Award nominations whose size rivals an orc army. Jackson maintained that would be his only foray into Middle Earth, but thirteen years later he returned to tale the story of The Hobbit over three films. For diehard Middle Earth fans, the idea of more movies set in Tolkien’s playground would be welcomed from the director and that’s just what reporters at a recent press conference wanted to get to the bottom of. Rumors have swirled about Jackson tackling The Simarillion – another work by Professor JRR Tolkien that details much of the early mythos and history of Middle Earth, but Jackson put these rumors and speculation to quickly to bed. It turns out there won’t be any more movies set in the world of Middle Earth not because he doesn’t want them, but because he’s not allowed to explaining quote, “…it's a legal thing. The Tolkien estate owns the writings of Professor Tolkien - 'The Hobbit' and the 'Lord of the Rings' were sold by Professor Tolkien in the late 60s... the film rights. So they are the only two works of his that have ever been sold. Without the cooperation of the Tolkien estate, there can't be more films." That pretty much puts it to rest and we have to imagine there’s got to be some relief there for the director as well. He’s put in well over a decade of dedication into these films and he deserves a long vacation and a chance to expand into new territory. But some aren’t so sure this will be Jackson’s last foray into Middle Earth. Ian McKellan, who of course plays Gandalf, said at the premiere that Jackson told him back in 2001 that The Lord of the Rings was the end and here they are 13 years later, so he doesn’t believe this is necessarily the end of the journey. Of course, there’s always a chance, but what do you think? Would you like to see the world of Middle Earth expanded even further on the big screen or is 6 films enough?
