EVGA have explained how Amazon’s new MMO, “New World” bricked their 3090 graphics cards.

Amazon’s new MMO “New World” recently entered it’s beta test period, and owners of a specific GPU had a nasty shock.

Some 24 EVGA 3090 graphics cards were bricked, meaning to be rendered useless that their only use would be as a brick, as a result of playing the game.

Twtich streamer Gladd tweeted a warning to other users after his graphics card was fried:

“ATTENTION: Playing the New World beta on my EVGA 3090 has fried my graphics card completely. There are many accounts of this same thing happening with the same card with the same game.

I just want to make sure this doesn't happen to others”

This is an expensive misstep, as currently graphics cards are in high demand, so prices are heavily inflated, but on top of that, EVGA’s 3090s are currently retailing for around $2,000.

Luckily, EVGA did commit to send out replacement GPUs for those who lost their cards.

A company spokesman for EVGA said a “rare soldering issue” was to blame for the failings. All of the bricked 3090s received by EVGA were from a small batch of cards manufactured in 2020.

An X-Ray analysis shows “poor workmanship” on soldering near the card’s MOSFET circuits, which are small electrical components that comprise the voltage regulator module in the GPU.

Interestingly however, no new problems have been reported to EVGA since Amazon added frame limiters in the menu system, something missing from previous iterations of “New World”, to the game.
