Exercise Science Statistics: Chi Squared (X^2) in 7 Minutes
Chi Squared is used to determine if an association exists between layers of two (only two) nominally scaled variables. Normally computed with a 2x2 square.
The example given by Marrow, Mood, Disch, & Kang (2016) was how many males verse females participated in either an aerobic or strength class.
First, set up (state- write this down somewhere) the null hypothesis "There is no relation between gender and the class attendance." That way, the null can either be accepted (meaning there is no difference, change, or association) or rejected (there is a difference).
Nominal: the naming or classifying a group of data such as male and female for gender, aerobic or strength for classes. While running either SPSS or MS Excel you will need to assign a number to those values since either application only recognizes numbers for mathematical output. Bear in mind, this is not an hierarchy order (ordinal- 1st place, 2nd place; etc.) so you as the writer will need to know the differences.
