0Combat Complex is a fun new released sci-fi ARPG with Diablo-style loot and procedurally-generated levels in development. You're shooting alien bugs and robots with guns that never run out of ammo and only need to cool down, not reload. Think arcade twin-sticks like Assault Android Cactus, Geometry Wars, etc. Rather than firing relentlessly at swarms of enemies just by pointing the stick at them, here cooldown makes you use your three firing modes to keep up and match guns to threats. The three guns on three buttons via swap and two triggers surely sounds weird, and no reloading or ammo might give you pause as lacking gameplay, but it really comes together to give the game-feel its special sauce. You'll switch instantly between your narrow rifle and hard-hitting but wide-spread shotgun without even releasing the trigger, and the third weapon's trigger interrupts the main, so you drop its shots into the mix as you go, trying to keep the bugs and overheating under control. This is not a shooter where you place your shots one by one, stick to a favorite gun, or duck out behind cover to reload. Things come fast, fight intensity is high, and the game encourages you to get in and mix it up. Combat Complex has a clever mechanic, the glowy reward orb drops. These fuel speed and damage boosts as well as recover health, but are notably short-lived once one pops from an enemy, and you often need to take risks to grab it, especially since your dodge is just for movement and offers no built-in invulnerability. You need to frequently make situational choices about whether an orb drop is in play and the risk of ones you can survive acquiring, and these add a nice texture to your fighting. The game asks you to take chances, and while you can sit back and pass, it's more fun if you play its way, and chase the orbs you can get. I look forward to seeing how this game develops.
