We spent some time at the White Hills Mining District exploring a few of the many abandoned mines there. The White Hills District was formed in 1892 when silver was discovered. Many mines were dug in the immediate area, and there are supposedly 27 miles of tunnels underground. The town of White Hills quickly grew overnight and reached a peak population of 1500 by 1898. A few years later, the town and some of the mines were wiped out by a flash flood. The town and mining district never fully recovered from that disaster, and by 1905 White Hills was a ghost town with no residents. We explored the Norma Mine, the Prince Albert Mine, and the Grand Army of the Republic Mine.
