In Classic Races your starting position influences the Speed you start a race at.
Starting from the front reduces the Speed. Runners in the rear places are given a better start as compensation for their unfavorable starting position

The difference in Starting Speed between the first and the last row of 4 players is approximately 90 km/h, giving players from behind a chance to build up Speed.
Collisions with players in front of you will reduce the acceleration ever so slightly, while front starters want to make use of bumps from behind to compensate for the low Starting Speed

Classic Mode is all about keeping your Speed high and making use of Back Bumps as often as possible. Like in the 99 Modes you want to have a good start. Look at the triangles on the bottom of your screen when nearby players are getting closer to you and lur them in your line to receive Acceleration and Speed Bumps. Bumpers also can be used to gain Speed and Acceleration if you bump them when taking over by strafing with the Shoulder Buttons
