F-Zero GX VR - Story Mode Chapter 7 (Normal Difficulty)
I've been replaying F-Zero GX a lot recently and decided to get it up and running in Dolphin VR. Unfortunately, doing so is more painful than Mario Kart Wii: in MKWii you can get the framerate of the game to upscale from 60FPS to 90 so head movements are nice and smooth. F-Zero crashes if you do this, so instead I had to set timewarp upscaling to 90FPS. This is why you see black bars on the screen as I move my head fast: the in-game camera position is only updating at 60FPS and therefore is moving slower than my head.
Otherwise, the only real issue is that the framerate tanks at the start of every race when you have all 30 cars firing their engines at once. It tends to clear up after the first 5 seconds or so seconds though as you move through the pack.
Anyways, here's the infamous F-Zero Grand Prix Chapter in story mode done in VR. I honestly expected this to take forever to complete this way but given it only took 2 tries I opted to include both attempts. This chapter was a nightmare when I was a kid, but when you realize the computer is always going to rubber band, on normal and hard I found the winning strategy is to basically just try to stay near but not at the front of the pack until halfway through the final lap and conserve energy. Then, hammer the booster starting at the narrow bridge and don't stop until you cross the finish line.
Very hard mode can burn in Hell though.
