Wii U Rainbow Road - V1 Beta 1 Release - Mario Kart Wii Custom Track
http://wiki.tockdom.com/wiki/Wii_U_Rainbow_Road_(Squadaloo)
This is a demake of Mario Kart 8's Rainbow Road. Honestly, this started as me wanting to try to demake a Mario Kart 8 course to see both how difficult it would be and so I could play it in Virtual Reality which I can do with Mario Kart Wii in Dolphin VR. I picked Rainbow Road because I figured a track floating in space would be way easier to do than an actual environment, but in retrospect this ended up not exactly being the case because the textures are very purpose built for the original track and the 3D nature of the roadface meant it was challenging to both keep the geometry down to keep it running fine on the Wii while still being complex enough to not be too rough to drive on.
Originally I planned on this being a relatively quick project which I would complete and then go back to wrap up some other tracks I still have in beta, but it ended up being both more difficult than anticipated and I also had numerous other commitments come up which pulled me away repeatedly. In the end, this was 2 months of off and on effort.
This is the first beta, there are still major issues with enemy and item pathing (as demonstrated by DK in this video), particularly during the split road section but I will have very little time to work on it in the coming month so I wanted to get this out now rather than letting it sit and get stale in my brain and have me reluctant to return to it.
I hope you enjoy it!
===WHY IS _____ DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL?===
A vast majority of the modeling and texturing differences are because I needed to cut down on geometry and texture size to get the track into Mario Kart Wii. As such, numerous details such as extra satellites, space ships, boxes, Toads, and details are completely MIA. I'm hoping to eventually rework some details to bring some of these back but with the file size already pushing what MKWii is capable of loading, I wouldn't hold my breath on these returning.
The main space station also doesn't spin because I wanted it to have collision in case of flying bananas and wasn't sure what objects in MK Wii both could rotate and have exact collision so for now it's just part of the track model.
The other biggest notable absence is the giant stars you fly through in the cannon portion in the original. This is actually missing because I simply can't find the original model/textures for it and everything else here was built using those models as a guide and I didn't want to wing it. If I were to find that model/texture, I'd probably replace the two sets of stands along the cannon section with them (even though those stands are in the original as well, but
again, need to keep performance in mind).
