F/A-18 interceptor • World Scale Comparison and Timing Test: A500 vs A1200 / JF4 / MSFS2020
This was an interesting experiment. Initially I wanted to check what's the difference in gameplay timing in F/A-18 Interceptor when playing it on Amiga 500 (system it was designed for) vs Amiga 1200 which is basically clocked at 2x the speed of A500.
But then I thought - lets see how it compared to the other game in the franchise - as Jet Fighter IV from 2001 also has the same map. On top of that we could use Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 to compare all of this to the scale of actual world.
I tried to perform each flight as similar as I could - start at Oakland, go full throttle, rotate at around 150 kts, climb to 1000ft and head straight for Bay Bridge then turn left towards Golden Gate. Note that the flight models differ between the games, so I had to use AB in MSFS2020 right after take off because the Super Hornet didn't accelerated as fast as the Hornet in the F/A-18 Interceptor / Jet Fighter IV on dry thrust setting.
Conclusions:
• playing F/A-18 on A1200 is like playing it in fast-forward mode, better stick with stock A500 (or A500 speeds when emulating, even if the framerate will suffer)
• the game from 1988 depicted the world scale really well, the comparison with MSFS2020 was really close, could be even closer when the flight parameters in both flights were kept tighter. The accuracy in F/A-18 Interceptor seems even better than in JF4 from 2001.
